Random Life moments from a Biracial Guy with a Unique perspective on Life

My experience living in Florida

Once upon a time back in the year 2000 I lived in Florida, Vero Beach to be exact.  My mother had this grand idea to relocate my 80+ year old grandfather and myself away from the redneck saturated hills of West Virginia to a better and new existence in Florida.  After wasting away in Huntington WV doing non productive things I decided to not only entertain that idea but actually leave the huge old brick house that I  occupied with two buddies on 6th avenue and Trenton place.  My grandfather stayed behind in Lewisburg, for he would not budge from his life at the assisted living facility Greystone Landing that he loved so much.
OFF TO FLORIDA I WENT, Optimistic about the future.  Now I’ve been called everything in the book from Latino, Puerto Rican, Indian, and even a Mutt once, from a classless moron in Baltimore, but that’s another story.  What I found in Florida was a division of races like I’d never seen before, a real life modern segregation, and just as many if not more rednecks per capita than West Virginia…After gas station attendants tried to communicate with me in Spanish practically every time I entered a convenience store I began to get a little irritated.  After hearing the term Cracker (usually talking about the white guy that hung out with me) each time I hung out with my black friends I met while working at the local applebees, I realized that I felt more out of place than I’ve ever felt in my life.  BTW feeling out of place is something that I’ve grown accustomed to being biracial (half black/half white) living in West Virginia for years.  Anyway, Florida left a sour taste in my mouth because of the above reasons.  So after about a year I returned north to the mountains of West Virginia.  At least there people knew WHO and WHAT I was!  West Virginia ain’t so bad. As long as you surround yourself with the right people you can be happy anywhere.  I think Florida would have worked for me if I would have had my wife and kids with me but at that time I was ridin solo.  Last year I took the family down to Vero and Miami on vacation and had a blast.  Hey maybe just maybe its time to move back?

  2. I am also biracial, and THAT is the hardest subject for me to broach in regards to living in Florida. Definitely a reason not to live there though.
